As part of a new blog series I thought I’d take a few pieces that I’ve always viewed as wardrobe staples, essentials if you will, and style them up a few different ways to show why I feel they are a must have for any modern day gent in 2019.
There are certain shoes that are timeless and will never go out of fashion and the leather brogue is exactly that, a shoe design that has long been a symbol of the dapper gent.
Interestingly ‘brogues’ started out as shoes worn by Irish and Scottish farmers to navigate the highland bogs and marshy terrains, but they’ve certainly come a long way since then and for me there’s no more versatile shoe available to the modern day guy.
Whether styled with a smart suit or casual pair of ripped jeans, the brogue will never look out of place and it is for that simple reason it’s without doubt one of the first pair of shoes to make it into my ‘wardrobe staples’ for 2019.
Here’s a few of my favourite ways to style up the leather brogue:
Casual Vibes – With Jeans & A ‘Turn-Up’:
The most casual way to rock the brogue is with denim jeans, ultra comfortable and ideal for the daily commuter for a jam-packed day of meetings. I like to add turn-up for an extra bit of detailing.
*When to wear – For casual days in the office or a dressed-down Friday.

Commuter Style – With Chinos & A Gilet:
A slightly ‘edgier’ look and way to rock the brogues this season, with cropped chinos and a gilet, weatherproof in every sense of the word and still smart enough for meetings with clients. Add a pair of contrasting socks to add some texture to the outfit and don’t forget the umbrella!
*When to wear – If the weather forecast is looking ominous and rain is expected, this outfit is a great way of keeping dry whilst looking good.

Night Out On The Town – With Tailored Trousers:
Without a doubt the smartest way to wear the brogue is with a pair of tailored suit trousers. Whether you’ve got an ultra important business meeting or it’s date night with your love, this look will never let you down. I like to have my trousers tailored so they sit just above the shoe to really showcase the detailing and let the brogue do the real talking.
*When to wear – For those smarter occasions when something a little smarter is required. If you are ever unsure with regards to a dress code, this outfit and style will always tick the boxes.
