When talking wardrobe staples and in particular wardrobe staples for holidays, the classic polo shirt is without doubt the standout contender. Highly versatile and easy to pack, whether it’s long-sleeved, pique or cotton, the possibilities are endless and they are a cornerstone of any decent spring or summer outfit.
Having launched the business back in 1972, Ralph Lauren celebrates their 50th anniversary this year and is there a more iconic piece than the Ralph polo shirt, a real game changer in menswear.
The Ralph Lauren Polo Shirt is timeless and for me it’s a design that has always played a role in my wardrobe, whether as an alternative to a shirt in the evenings or a smarter look for the beach.
Here are a few basic Man About Town rules for when rocking the classic polo shirt:
1. Choose the right fit – whether it’s classic, slim or custom slim, a polo shirt should be worn in a trim fit and never baggy or loose.
2. Never Tuck In – If you are wearing the right size the polo should sit just below the belt-line, a ‘tuck-in’ is never fashionable.
3. Button Up – Use the buttons to match the look you are going for. If it’s a casual vibe, undone buttons are acceptable, but if it’s a smarter look be sure to have at least one of the two buttons done up.
As aforementioned, the beauty of the polo shirt is its sheer versatility, equally at home with swim shorts, chinos or a blazer. Here are two holiday inspired looks where the classic polo shirt subtly takes centre stage:
As you guys know, I travel a fair bit with work and so I need to be able to pack a suitcase in a hurry. The polo shirt is a regular in my travel case and I tend to take a couple of colours but nothing looks better with a tan than the classic white.
There’s no need to iron the polo shirt, meaning it’s a great option for travel and it can be worn day and night.
Fits include classic, custom slim and slim, but my all time favourite has always been the custom slim fit, fitted and comfortable.
I like to pack my polo shirt in my beach bag, it’s the ideal shirt for lunch or coffee stops and looks at home with swimmers. The cotton is breathable, making a polo a much more comfortable option than a cotton shirt or knit.

Holiday evening attire can be a tricky one, especially if you are looking to pack light and avoid overpacking. I’m a big fan of versatility and making your wardrobe work for you and this is where I find the polo shirt really comes into its own.
At home with both shorts and chinos, the polo shirt can look smart or casual depending on how you choose to style around it. For evenings and a slightly smarter look, pair your polo shirt with tailored chinos and smarter shoes and with a button done up on the shirt for that finishing touch.
Chinos are another summer wardrobe staple and these lighter blue slim fit twill chinos are another versatile piece. If you are wearing a white polo shirt, look to choose colourful chinos to add some vibrancy. I’m particularly loving my pastels – pinks and blues are the way this spring/summer.
When it comes to footwear, comfort should come first. I’m loving my smarter kicks at the moment and they look great with chinos. Try out a ‘turn up’ and show a bit of ankle and of course, never wear socks – you’re on holiday.
*Top Tip – Pair your white polo shirt with some statement glasses in the evening for a stand out look.
