Branching Out – Five Woody Fragrances For Autumn

A change of season brings with it the opportunity to seriously change things up, whether that’s updating your wardrobe with some new pieces, changing up your grooming regime or mixing up your fragrance game.

You should always look to wear a fragrance that will compliment the season, climate and surroundings and this season is all about those deeper, warmer tones – think smoky bonfires, chunky knitwear and cosy afternoons by an open-fire.  I always look for an Autumn fragrance that is deeply woody using ingredients such as sandalwood or cedar, that are both warm and spicy and work well in contrast with the crisp cold days.

Here are my favourite 5 fragrances to help you ‘branch out’ this Autumn and add some much needed warmth to your outfits:

1. Eau De L’Occitan Eau De Toilette:

Combining the freshness of lavender with the woodiness of black pepper and burnt wood, Eau De L’Occitan is a great everyday fragrance for the Autumn months.  I particularly like the addition of tonka bean which leaves a smoky finish reminiscent of a whisky bar.

*Pair this fragrance with a chunky knit and gilet for a warm and comfortable commute into the office.

2. Ermenegildo Zegna, Elements Of Man – Strength:

A very powerful fragrance and a firm favourite of mine from this time last year.  Strength from Ermenegildo Zegna is a scent for the modern day gent who likes to be noticed.

It fuses the smokiness of tobacco leaves and the intensity of agarwood (otherwise known as oud) to form a luxurious and masculine scent.  Burnt musk and pine needles leave a woody finish that is just ideal for the Autumnal months.

*Pair this fragrance with a crisp white shirt, tailored trousers and textured blazer for an important business meeting or lunch date.

3. Molton Brown – Russian Leather:

Russian Leather by Molton Brown is a true classic, and ideally suited to Autumn with its warm and leathery, sensual notes.  It’s success lies in its use of Siberian pine and birch, creating a fresh yet woody scent that can be worn on any occasion.

It’s the perfect Autumn fragrance when you’re after a scent that’s warm and comforting, but still ultra sexy.

*Pair this fragrance with a classic long sleeve polo or merino knit and jeans for a casual Autumn look.

4. Clive Christian, Noble Collection – Rococo VIII:

VIII Rococo from the Noble Collection at Clive Christian is the most floral on this list and without a doubt most unique.  Combining bergamot and lemon with immortelle gives it a very fresh top note and something unlike anything I’ve sniffed before.

The inclusion of amber, papyrus and vetiver creates a very woody and almost earthy after-scent, getting you in just the right the mood to make the most of those dark winter nights

*Pair this fragrance with a dinner suit for a special occasion to make the ultimate impression on the night.

5. L’Occitane & Pierre Herme – Mandarin & Immortelle:

Interestingly another fragrance utilising immortelle and one that packs a real punch.  Combining the citrus notes of mandarine with the more floral notes of immortelle for a rather intoxicating scent.

Quite possibly my favourite on this list purely down to the unique scent and ultimately it’s a fragrance like no other – perfect for those looking to stand out from the crowd or make a real statement when walking into crowded room.

*Pair this fragrance with a cashmere roll-neck and tailored trousers (blazer optional) for a night out on the town.

As we transition into a new season, possibly my favourite of all, it’s the perfect time to reach for couple of new scents that evoke the scent of Autumn and add some much needed warmth to your outfits.
