The modern world of men’s grooming is a riddle wrapped in an enigma and with such a plethora of products available, it can be really rather overwhelming at times. Gone are the days of the tried and tested soap and water combo and today’s Man About Town is expected to keep up with an ever-changing cast of serums, masks and newly discovered ingredients. I’m here to help you guys cut through the BS and help you get the right grooming product for you this season, to ensure you stay blemish free!
While daily scrubs and night time serums are cabinet essentials for the chillier months, there’s nothing like a real deep cleanse to rejuvenate your skin and no better product than a classic clay face mask. I appreciate there’s still a bit of a stigma attached to using face masks as a guy, but rest assured everyone is using them, even if they aren’t forthcoming about it.
Here’s my top picks to keep your pores squeaky clean during the cold months that lie ahead:
A firm favourite of mine since it’s launch last year, the Purifying Clay Mask from L’Oreal Men Expert uses kaolin mineral extracts to reach deep into pores and even out skin tone, removing any dirt and excess oil whilst getting rid of any pesky dead skin cells which can further clog the pores.
Ideal For – The Purifying Clay Mask is perfect for oily and combination skin types and you can use this bad boy 2-3 times a week.
Price – At under £7 it’s a great price point and I’d say this is the ideal entry level mask for those of you new to the masking game!
This product has long been part of my personal weekly grooming routine and helps draw out excess oils and toxins whilst diminishing fine lines. Watch the mask get to work whilst massaging into your skin, paying extra attention to that t-zone and other ultra oily areas.
Ideal For – Perfect for acne-prone skin, Oil Control by LAB doubles as an effective cleanser and is a great all-rounder when it comes to removing any excess oil. Its gritty paste-like formula lifts excess dirt and oil without irritation and gently exfoliates, so I often like to use pre-shave.
Price – A bit pricier but still good value when you consider this product does the job of two being both a mask and cleanser. A great product to have in any travel wash bag.
This detoxifying mask uses vitamins A, B, C and D draws out harmful impurities and the inclusion of Bamboo Charcoal helps gently exfoliate and unclog pores. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
Ideal For – Blemish-prone skin, this mask clears and prevents breakouts with 1% Salicylic Acid to help clear & help prevent new black heads.
Price – The priciest on this list but well worthy of the investment. I’d say use this mask more sparingly, perhaps once a week and you need only apply a thin layer for 10-15 minutes.

TIP – To maximise the benefits of any face masks, fill your sink with hot water and use a flannel to gently steam and open up those pores before applying any mask.
