The list of basic essentials that should constitute the wardrobe of every stylish man is not particularly long. From simple (yet high quality) shirts to perfectly cut trousers, to the versatile wax jacket you have no excuse not to own; here, I’ve selected the five basics that should form the foundation of any successful wardrobe during Autumn Winter.
What was once a passing trend is now a bona fide menswear essential. A wool over-shirt packs an outer layer that looks good on everyone, so invest in a simple, clean cut in a dark, versatile shade. A navy over-shirt is the perfect piece of transition tailoring and can be worn as a stand-alone piece or layered underneath a wax jacket or peacoat during the colder months. This season I’m particularly loving a roll neck & over-shirt combo for a smart casual vibe.
An essential Autumn Winter item, the chunky knit is one of my go-to pieces for those particularly frosty mornings. There’s quite simply no warmer base layer and I’ve always loved using a chunky knit to add some much needed texture to an outfit. Why not look for a more colourful knit like this one from Fat Face, a great way to add some colour and vibrancy on a grey day.
There’s very little that won’t go with a button down shirt, whether worn under a crew neck jumper at the weekend or teamed with a pair of slim chinos and a blazer for smarter occasions, this is the most versatile item in your wardrobe. Opt for a shirt cut from thick, soft cotton that will keep you comfortable and looking slick all Winter long.
A good alternative to jeans and great if you don’t want to wear suit trousers, a slim pair of corduroy trousers chinos are ideal for Winter. I’ve always loved combining corduroy with more subtle textures like brushed wool and there’s no warmer trouser in the game. Why not invest in a pair in an Autumnal tone to echo the falling leaves and transitioning seasons?
Wear with a shirt, shirt and jacket, t-shirt, t-shirt and wax jacket – the options are endless. Worn with a white shirt or tucked in Tee with a crewneck jumper or navy blazer over the top, a pair of corduroy trousers are the ideal bridge between casual and formal.
The classic wax jacket, it’s easier to wear than you think and arguably the most timeless of jackets and coats. Whether you decide to pair with denim jeans and a chunky knit or an oxford shirt and cords, the look you should go for is casual, but in control. Perfect for Autumn through to Spring, a proper wax jacket will keep out the rain and look as sharp when worn over your suit as it will with a T-shirt and jeans.
