How To Get The Best Out Of Wimbledon This Year

*This post is an advertising feature for American Express®

I often view the beginning of Wimbledon as the true start of the British summer and this could not be more accurate this year with the arrival of some truly stunning weather here in London!

For me, there really is no better way to spend a summer’s afternoon than basking in the rays at the historic All England Lawn Tennis Club, watching tennis greats charge around the pristine grass whilst munching on the scrumptious combination of fresh strawberries and cream.

Here’s a few tips from me to help you get the most out of Wimbledon this year and ensure you have the best possible experience:

What To Wear:

I always like to look my best at calendar events such as Wimbledon and usually I’d look to a smart shirt and either linen suit or blazer and chinos.  However, this fantastic weather does of course pose a few issues when it comes to your attire and I’d strongly advise against wearing a suit this year unless you want to be very uncomfortable come midday!

Consider a pair of tailored smart shorts, alongside a classic cotton Oxford shirt for the ultimate in smart casual.  I went for a white pair as I thought this would be a nice homage to the renowned player’s dress code, where Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam tournament to enforce a player’s outfit colour, everything must of course be white.

Go for a striped shirt if you are looking to make more of a statement and a linen double-breasted blazer makes the ideal companion.

Complete your look with a pair of trusty loafers, just be sure you’ve worn them a few times before as you’ll likely be doing a fair bit of walking around the ground.

 Pit Stops:

American Express has been a long-standing supporter of tennis in the US through its partnership with the US Open. This year American Express’ support extends over the pond, as it kicks off its multi-year role as Official Payment Partner of The Championships.  As part of this new partnership there are a number of exciting areas across the grounds that are well worth a visit! These include…

The American Express Fan Experience:

The American Express Fan Experience is the ideal spot for a break from the tennis and offers a whole host of fun experiences. This includes a virtual reality game called ‘Champion’s Rally’ where you will receive virtual coaching tips from none other than American Express’ newest Ambassador Andy Murray and a calming zone where you can listen to the infamously hot-headed player John McEnroe read the rules of tennis to soothe stressed fans in a light hearted recording! You can also share your experiences through the new postal service which enables you to mail postcards to friends and family free of charge.

The Fan Experience is located in the Southern Village behind Court 2.

There is also a complimentary sunglasses cleaning station, which I found particularly handy, and an Amex radio stand to ensure you won’t miss out on any of the tennis whilst exploring the grounds. The radios cover all the action across the three official Wimbledon Radio channels (do be quick if you want one though, as there is a limited amount given away each day).

The Fan Experience is open to everyone, not just American Express Cardmembers and is a really fun place to visit at some point during your day.

The American Express Cardmember Lounge:

If you are an American Express Cardmember, you and two guests will have complimentary access to the prestigious Cardmember Lounge this year, located in the very heart of the Grounds and overlooking the play of some of the courts.

The Cardmember Lounge is the perfect place to take some respite from the heat and whether it’s sipping on ‘TheSW19’ Lanson cocktail or grabbing one of the many sweet treats on offer, it is a fantastic spot to sit back and relax.  There are charging ports available and a fantastic balcony where you can catch a quick glimpse of the ground courts (note you can’t watch matches from here, as the noise could disturb the players on court).

What To Bring:

-Sun cream, look for SPF 30 and above for that crucial protection

-Sunnies, it might sound obvious but don’t forget the most important of all accessories

-A refillable water bottle, there are multiple water refill stations located across the grounds, be sure to stay hydrated!

-Your American Express Card, spend £120 on-site at Wimbledon with your enrolled, eligible American Express Card and get £20 back! [Terms Apply]

Other benefits:

Keep an eye out for the American Express presale happening again this year. Cardmembers will be able to purchase hospitality packages in the Presale, which is open to all Cardmembers with an eligible and registered American Express Card from 2pm on 15th July – 10am on 19th

Wimbledon Etiquette:

-Switch that phone to silent, you don’t want to be disturbing any players

-Disable your camera flash when taking any snaps

-Enter or leave a court only at changes of ends, or between matches, and never during a tiebreak

Who’s your outside bet for Wimbledon next year?  Will you be attending?
