I think it’s safe to say the humble hoodie is having a rebirth, a renaissance if you will. This sudden return signals that we’re now at the peak of athleisure. Having successfully broached upscale sportswear in its various forms, it was only a matter of time before menswear got its mitts on the near-century-old staple.
I’m loving wearing a hoodie as part of a layered look at the moment, whether thats layered underneath a classic mac or bomber jacket or underneath a blazer for something more formal. Don’t think that rocking one is all about making a statement though. When used as part of a layered look, the hoodie can be surprisingly unassuming and not to mention very comfortable, creating the ideal base layer protection against these winter winds.
If you’re looking for an effortless vibe but don’t want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed, try layering up a hoodie with a black biker jacket or suede bomber with a pair of dark navy or black skinny fit jeans. You’ll get more of a dressed up edgy finish and look cool all at the same time. Layering is key to dressing up a hoodie, so try to opt for one with thinner material, as you don’t want to end up overwhelmed (or hot) in too many layers.
If you’re going to wear a hoodie with a suit or blazer, you’re channelling a ‘look’ and will instantly mark yourself out as a card-carrying member of Club Menswear. That’s no reason not to give this high-low combination a whirl, though.
To nail the sports-meets-suit look, try a mid-weight grey hoodie with a charcoal grey suit and choose white lace-up sneakers in place of your normal work shoes. For something a little more stand-out, why not have a play with some tone-on-tone, mixing a hoodie and coat of the same colour palette?
Here’s a couple of my favourite ways to embrace the hoodie’s rebirth:
